Babies, Babies all around!

Finally! I am posting about a handmade project again:
October 2009 must have been a very fertile month. Two of my friends are expecting their first babies in June and with both having their Baby showers within a week, I had to crack out the whip because I really wanted to create something special. I saw the Charm Square Baby quilt first at Modern Domestic end of April and knew it would be the perfect gift for the two newbies on this planet. The adorable design is by Elizabeth Hartman, a talented quilter and teacher here in Portland. She blogs about her quilt projects here. You can buy and download free instructions from her site and in case you are local, she teaches how to make this and other quilts at MD. I think, the result looks stunning and is actually very simple to make – it’s a beginners class at MD. And the uneven quilting lines is giving this quilt a special charm!
The quilt above is for a little boy and trying to avoid the powder blue color scheme, I went with taupes and dusty tones, infused with purple and brown. I absolutely love the outcome.

The second version is for a little girl! I tried to stay away from the pink tones and went with peach, tan and burgundy tones. How lucky am I to find out that the peach is exactly the tone they painted the nursery with?

All of the fabrics for Both projects were bought at Bolt and Cool Cottons here in Portland.

  • as the lucky recipient of the beautiful ‘boy’ quilt, i must say i am simply amazed with the design.

daniela, you have always amazed me with your talent and skill, but this gift you gave to our new-coming family member is so humbling with the time and energy you spent on making this for us. i am so lucky to have you as a friend, and this gift will for sure be handed down generation after generation.

much love to you my friend! xoxoxo-michelle

  • You are so sweet! I guess you have to ‘pay’ for it by having us around your lovely pool this summer :) So happy for you guys!

  • Per a lovely email I received from someone, I removed and exchanged the intro photo with Leona’s tushie. It’s sad to know that there are people out there who get too excited about innocent pictures like that. Thanks for the note!

  • you are so lovely Tang!
It is so sad that there are creeps out there ruining such adorable photos!

  • Ugh, heart melt! I love the creative challenges of staying away from blue and pink gave you, I am in the midst of some of my own non-blue or pink baby gifts…much smaller projects such as burp clothes rather than quilts. Beautiful job!

  • Gorgeous quilts! Very inspirational. I have 2 friends with babies due in the next month and I’m wondering if I should attempt my first ever quilts.

  • Try it! It’s actually not that difficult. And with your sewing experience, you’ll be done with it in half a day!
