365: January

Kind of on a whim did I decide to take part in the famous 365 challenge. At the start of the year I didn’t even have a camera yet. When it finally arrived on January 5th I jumped right in. Part of the reason surely is to improve on my photography skills – but also to journal a year in pictures. But I have to admit that it is quite challenging. And some days I had a hard time to take a shot. I also realize, that I need some sort of weekly framework to come up with themes rather than random shots. Click on the pic above to get to larger size pics on flickr.

So for February, I want to photograph typography and urban textures for a week each. Then I’d like to do some self portraits for a week and for the last week I don’t really know what I want to do. Any suggestions?

Chunky Knits

I have finally started to work with the Twinkle Yarn I bought last year to knit up a chunky sweater coat. When I ordered the yarn, I wanted to make this coat but changed my mind when I got the yarn three months after I actually ordered it. So now, I am taking all the knowledge I gained with ‘Knitting from the Top” by Barbara Walker and Custom Knits by Wendy Bernard to create a simple style that’s knitted top down. I took inspiration from this style.

The last couple of weeks I took some ‘time off’ my sewing machine. Reading, reading, planning and plotting – not even knitting!

It took quite a while to get back to it. Before the turn of the year I had gotten a bit dis-enchanted with sewing for some reason. Was it that my love affair had ended?
Beginning of December ended the pattern drafting class with Amy at Modern Domestic. Super informative – that girl just has her stuff down – and a lot of nice girls that took the class. I knew that I had a bit of an advantage – having a pretty good idea about pattern construction – yet I had never ever created a basic sloper for my own body. So far I created two garments from that sloper and they both are fitting pretty well – more about that later this week. I had all those ideas in my head but didn’t get to make it all and got super frustrated with myself. Especially as two projects turned out not so perfect. And I felt that even after spending so much time behind the machine the last two years, it would take me many, many more years to really become an experienced sewist. Besides, we received the note that within the next three months, I will be able to get to work again! So things are very exciting and I am hoping that I’ll be able to pick up the pieces where I had left off about 2.5 years ago – and come back even stronger then before.

So I switched the sewing machine off.

To start planning and plotting and ideating…

Until last Satuday.

And it felt sooo good.

Just like catching up with an old friend again.

And today, i finished this skirt.

More about the skirt with me stuck in it later this week :)

Happy 2011!

… here I am again! You won’t believe – but my beloved camera broke end of last year and without it – there is not much use to write a blog post. So no pictures of the yearly mini break to Mt. Bachelor where L started to learn skiing. No pics of the christmas tree, the decoration and the presents. And also no pictures of projects I finished end of December. These however will follow soon.

Anyways, here the very first pictures with my new (refurbished) camera.
The turquoise hat is by the way the hat Andy likes the best of all hats I made so far.

Taken at Ford Food and Drink.
